Course Description:

This English Literature course, led by Mr. John Munene, focuses on the in-depth study of nouns—their definitions, classifications, usage, functions, and relevance in literary and grammatical contexts. Over the course of one semester, students explore how nouns form the building blocks of language and meaning in literary texts.

Key areas covered include:

Definitions and types of nouns (proper, common, concrete, abstract, collective, etc.)

Functions of nouns in sentences and literature

Noun phrase structure and agreement

Noun usage in literary analysis

Intergration of nouns in creative and academic writing.

Discipline and Expectations:

Attendance is compulsory. Students must report to class on time (11:00 AM sharp) every Wednesday.

No makeup tests or extensions for CATs, quizzes, or assignments. All assessments are done only once, and missing any will result in a zero unless officially excused in advance with strong justification.

Students are expected to demonstrate professionalism, respect during lectures, and submit assignments promptly.

Assessment Components:

CAT (Continuous Assessment Test) – 20%

Quizzes – 10%

Assignments – 10%

Final Exam – 60%

All assessments are aligned with course objectives and aim to test both theoretical understanding and practical application of nouns in English literature.

This course traces the development of the English language from its earliest origins to its modern form. It explores how historical, social, political, and cultural events have shaped English over time.

Main Historical Periods Covered:

1. Old English (c. 450–1100 AD):

Origin from Germanic tribes: Angles, Saxons, Jutes

Influence of Latin (Christian missionaries) and Norse (Vikings)

2. Middle English (1100–1500 AD):

After the Norman Conquest (1066)
